My approach to art making involves kilnforming, cameo engraving, casting and architectural work. My artwork is informed by travel throughout the US and Canada. In the past decade I have taken many road trips across the continent, often along two lane roads, passing through small towns. The travelled road, horizon and sky are main inspirations for my work. Engagement and observation of the natural world find expression in my artwork.
Manipulating the glass object in real time is an important part of my art making process. Mark making and evidence of the human hand is evident in my work. I believe in the transformative power of working with ones’ hands.
Community building through art making has been essential to my practice. I regularly collaborate with fellow artists, particularly with my longtime studio colleague, David Cunningham.

Jon has been working in glass art for over twenty years. Based in Takoma Park, Maryland, he was originally drawn to the material through glassblowing. Early on Jon discovered a hybrid process combining glassblowing with kilnforming. After many years he focused on kiln forming and especially cold working; creating glass forms via grinding, cutting and polishing.
In addition to his own studio, Jon regularly works at the Studio at the Corning Museum of Glass, in Corning, NY. Jon has studied with many leading national and international glass artists. His work has been in galleries in the Washington DC area and Wisconsin. As owner of Gravity Glass Studio, he taught classes for adults and youth and previously operated a public access studio. Jon co-founded and ran the Teen Glass Guild, an after school program for teens from 2010 - 2018. He is the recipient of an Independent Artist Award from the Maryland State Arts Council.
Jon has studied with and been profoundly influenced by artists including Mel Douglas, Richard Whiteley, April Surgent, Steve Klein and Richard Marquis. Kari Minnick, Anthony Corradetti, Richard Parrish and Keith Clayton offered critical support and studio space at important career junctures.
Glass art making is a third career for Jon. Previously he was a stay at home parent and a professional in the field of Socially Responsible Investing.
